Climate Assembly: What next for the climate movement?

Waterloo Action Centre London 2 August

Ecosocialist Action Network is calling a Climate Assembly on 2 August to discuss and plan the next steps in the campaign for a just, radical transition away from capitalism and towards a sustainable society.

Why this assembly?

The climate crisis is accelerating, and the mainstream response isn’t working.

This year, COP30 is happening in Belem and the argument over just transition is front and centre. But how can we get any kind of transition away from fossil capital?

What we’ll cover

  • The climate movement landscape is changing. XR and Just Stop Oil have ‘hung up their hi vis’ and paused their direct action campaigns. How do we effectively organise and mitigate for the increasing risk of activism landing us in jail?
  • The Green Party is focussing on elections – though left party leadership candidate  Zack Polanski is arguing for a ‘left populist’ turn.
  • Meanwhile, a new left party is being launched to challenge Labour over its capitulation to neoliberalism. What is the role of traditional parliamentary politics when we need radical and immediate change?
  • There has been a gradual ‘normalisation’ of the climate crisis. The environmental movement has lost a lot of the momentum it gathered before the Covid-19 pandemic. How do we galvanise people around ecosocialist ideas and launch a new climate movement?

We will be developing some of the ideas from our previous discussion in 2024 over a revolutionary climate strategy, which you can read here:

This assembly is open to anyone angry at greenwashing, state violence and climate breakdown, and who is looking for a serious alternative.
