Gilbert Achcar will be joining Anti*Capitalist Resistance via Zoom to talk about the second edition of his landmark 2013 work.
The People Want: A Radical Exploration of the Arab Uprising assesses the roots and dynamics of the Arab uprisings, and analyses the specific socio-economic features that hinder the region’s development. Gilbert also sheds light on the nature and role of the movements that use Islam as a political banner and the oil monarchies that sponsor them.
Gilbert grew up in Lebanon and is now Professor of Development Studies and International Relations at SOAS, University of London. He has written extensively on politics and development economics, as well as social change and social theory and he is steeped in the political currents of the region.
