Tradwives and crazy cat ladies: Gender in late stage capitalism

7.00pm

Thursday 10th October, 7pm at the Marchmont Centre, 62 Marchmont St, London WC1N 1AB

There is a backlash against women’s rights happening around the world. Online social media grifters sell a “traditional” idea of womanhood rooted in a nostalgic, one-sided view of the 1950s, as an alternative to the relentless grind of the modern workplace. And this gender ideology doesn’t just affect cis women. Many men, especially young men, are seduced by the misogynist machismo of Andrew Tate and the rigid social hierarchy of Jordan Peterson. Transpeople are under attack for defying gender rules and 2023 saw a serious rise in homophobic hate crimes.

Sexualised violence is still endemic everywhere but resistance includes mass protests taking place in India over the last month against the rape and murder of a female doctor at work in August. Right wing president Javier Milei in Argentina is targeting the gains made by the vibrant feminist movement over previous decades In 2022, Roe v Wade was overturned by the US Supreme Court and now prominent American politicians and pundits are campaigning for all women to become housewives and reject financial independence – with some even calling for women to lose the right to vote if they don’t have children.

And gender ideology doesn’t just affect cis women. Many men are being seduced by the misogynist machismo of Andrew Tate and the rigid social hierarchy of Jordan Peterson. Transpeople are under attack for defying gender rules and 2023 saw a serious rise in homophobic hate crimes.

Fighting for sexual and gender liberation also means a fight against capitalism and the economics that drives these ideas.

Come and join the discussion on how we can build a better world.
