Over the past days, severe flooding and landslides—driven by cyclone ‘Ditwah’ and worsened by long-standing vulnerabilities—have devastated almost all the districts across the island. Many lives have been lost, and even more people are reported missing. Entire communities have been displaced, livelihoods destroyed, and thousands are now in urgent need of safe shelter, food, clean water, and medical care.
As an island nation already burdened by economic crisis, IMF austerity measures, and climate-induced instability, Sri Lanka’s working people are experiencing the sharpest edge of this disaster. Rural and urban poor communities, plantation workers, farmers, and fisherfolk have borne the brunt of the destruction. Homes have been swept away; critical infrastructure has collapsed; and many families have lost everything they possess.
In this difficult hour, we turn to our international comrades for solidarity.
We are requesting emergency donations to support locally organized relief efforts rooted in community needs. Contributions will go directly toward:
- Immediate distribution of meals, clean drinking water, and essential supplies
- Temporary shelters and sanitation support for displaced families
- Medical assistance for the injured and vulnerable
- Repair of community infrastructure and long-term recovery initiatives
This is not simply a humanitarian appeal—it is a call to uphold our shared global commitment to justice, dignity, and collective care. As climate disasters intensify, international leftist solidarity remains essential to ensure that working people everywhere can survive, rebuild, and continue the struggle for a more just world. The Socialist People’s Forum is already involved in joint flood relief.
