The Parades Commission and courts, based on inexplicable advice from the Police Service of Nothern Ireland, have decided to try to bring back triumphalism and sectarian bile to the streets. This after 28 years of relative calm. Why? To what end? We need answers.

Scotland’s Republican Socialist Platform stands full square with the besieged residents of the Garvaghy Road and salutes their courageous and dignified response to the intolerable situation which has been foisted upon them.

We are disappointed that officers from Police Scotland have been sent to assist the PSNI, a decision we fear is less than wise.

As socialists and republicans and, most of all as human beings, we express our deep disquiet at the decisions of the Parades Commission and courts and the pitiful acquiescence of the UK government.

The proposed Orange parade needs to be stopped now. We call on the Secretary of State Chris Bryant to ban this unwanted sectarian parade and to work with local communities to put in place mechanisms so that such a situation is never repeated.

In any event, we stand in full solidarity with the Garvaghy Road residents as they defend their community.
