Ecosocialism in action – time to get serious

Politics requires three things: ideas, people, and money. By Anti*Capitalist Resistance

The twin crises of climate collapse and the rise of the far right pose a severe threat we cannot ignore. Austerity, scarcity and inequality have made our world a meaner and worse place.

The far right riots in the UK in August 2024 are a stark warning of what is at stake now.

From austerity to inflation, from food-banks to far right politics, from wildfires to toxic waste polluting our seas, the world is a mess, and it isn’t getting better. Runaway Global Warming has already begun. The devastating consequences of living in an economy driven only by profit, regardless of people or planet, are clear.

But much of the despair and rage are being pointed in the wrong direction, channelled into populist, authoritarian, conspiracy theory driven political forces. Racist demagogues attack ‘woke’ politics and target migrants and refugees. The rise of far right populist parties and movements threatens to turn back the clock on civil and human rights and are advocating climate denial politics just at the moment when we need clarity and action.

The growth of Reform in Britain and the increasing alliance of French businesses with the far right National Rally led by Marine Le Pen shows how things are accelerating. Thousands of people came out in London to back a far right march led by Tommy Robinson on Saturday 27 July, then the following week riots broke out in several towns and central London as far right thugs opportunistically used the murder of young children in Southport to begin a racist rampage.

We urgently need to build a mass movement that can begin to turn the tide.

Since its foundation, ACR has been clear that  we need to build an ecosocialist movement globally to challenge both capitalism and the reactionary politics it produces.

We are urging you to become active in that fight.

We have published a manifesto for Ecosocialist Revolution as our programme to argue our position more clearly.  We must target capital, confront the logic of endless accumulation, win workers to a green transition and fight for decommodified universal services for all.

But we are also about action. We have promoted the Restore Nature Now protest, joined every mass protest for Palestinians and supported solidarity actions for trans people. We were on strike and on the picket lines during the cost of living crisis in 2023, arguing for a wider movement to bring in not just workers but all people affected by the inflationary crisis.

We are forthright in our solidarity for the Ukrainian people against Russian invasion and support their right to self-defence, whilst also warning of the dangers of growing inter-imperialist rivalry that could well lead to another world war.

We played a key role in organising an ecosocialist conference in London in December 2023 that attracted over 150 people.  We are active in our trade unions, in our communities and support the self-organisation of the oppressed wherever we are present.

Through our links with the Fourth International, we are in regular contact like-minded organisations and individuals around the world.

As a result, we have grown as an organisation since we formed in 2021. But there is still so much more to do.

We have ideas that we need to spread, to do that we need people to become active in our movement and we need money to fund it all.

That is why we are issuing this appeal to all our supporters and friends. Read our manifesto and if you agree, join us. If you want to discuss further, please get in touch. If you can spare any money please donate to help us take on more paid staff and improve our organisation so that we can play a central role in the struggles to come.

It is ecosocialism or barbarism – the choice is with us now.
